A Unique Island of History and Nature
Pianosa Island stands out for its flat landscape and rich history. Inhabited since prehistoric times, it was used during the Roman era as a place of exile for Agrippa Postumus, grandson of Emperor Augustus. Later, from the 19th century until 1998, it hosted an agricultural penal colony and a maximum-security prison. Today, thanks to the restrictions imposed to protect its environment, Pianosa remains one of the most untouched and wild islands of the archipelago, featuring an extraordinary marine ecosystem and fascinating historical sites.
